Pep Guardiola says Manchester City’s resurgence is driven by renewed energy and mindset after a season where something felt missing

Manchester City manager Josep Guardiola has attributed the club’s strong resurgence this season to a renewed mindset and restored energy, following a period last year when he felt something vital was missing around the club.

Speaking ahead of Manchester City’s New Year’s Day Premier League trip to Sunderland, Guardiola reflected on the previous campaign and dismissed the notion that managers can instantly fix deep-rooted problems.

According to BBC Sport, Guardiola said he had never publicly criticised his club during difficult periods, despite acknowledging a clear dip in standards last season.

The City manager explained that the issue went beyond tactics or individuals, describing an intangible loss of energy that affected training and competition.

Guardiola said the feeling around the club changed during a pre-season period in the United States, where time away from pressure helped rebuild unity and belief.

He recalled being encouraged by the team’s performances despite defeats, noting that the squad trained well, competed strongly and reconnected during extended discussions and shared time together.

Guardiola stressed that the renewed atmosphere was crucial, even more than results, because it allowed him to recognise his team again.

He said Manchester City lost energy last season but gradually regained it through improved training intensity and competitive focus.

The Spaniard acknowledged that renewed energy does not guarantee trophies, but insisted it restores identity and consistency.

Manchester City have now recorded eight consecutive victories, a run Guardiola described as demanding but evidence of a stronger mentality.

Guardiola added that while improvement remains necessary, the current mindset represents a powerful step forward compared with the struggles of the previous season.
