Man United derby revival earns praise from Wayne Rooney, who says the Old Trafford atmosphere echoed the Sir Alex Ferguson era

Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has said supporters were given a rare reminder of the club’s glory years after a dramatic shift in atmosphere during the Manchester derby.

Speaking on Monday, Rooney said the energy inside Old Trafford felt similar to the Sir Alex Ferguson era, describing it as something missing for more than a decade.

Rooney made the remarks on BBC Sport following United’s derby victory, which he called the club’s best performance in a long time.

The former England captain said the Man United derby revival was evident in the crowd’s response and the players’ renewed belief.

Rooney, who won five Premier League titles at United, said fans “felt something” as the team showed intensity, resilience, and confidence.

He credited interim leadership under Michael Carrick for influencing both players and supporters.

Rooney said Carrick’s presence before kick-off helped energise the crowd and set the tone for the match.

He noted that many younger supporters had never seen United play with such conviction since Ferguson’s departure.

Rooney said the performance reflected core values once synonymous with the club, including hard work, bravery on the ball, and collective discipline.

He said the tactical changes were simple rather than complex, describing them as a smart adjustment rather than a radical overhaul.

Rooney said Carrick moved away from the back-three system associated with Ruben Amorim, who was dismissed earlier this month.

The former striker said the change allowed United to regain compactness and threaten Manchester City on the break.

Rooney singled out Amad and Dorgu for praise, citing their work-rate and defensive discipline on the wings.

He said the pair helped United remain tough to play against while still offering attacking threat.

Rooney added that the contrast with recent performances was striking, calling the improvement “night and day”.

He said the renewed energy, composure, and belief were visible both on the pitch and in the stands.

Rooney said the display reflected Manchester United’s identity, built on effort, teamwork, and resilience.
