Bandits reportedly release remaining worshippers abducted in Kurmin Wali church attack in Kaduna, following prayers and government intervention

Bandits have reportedly released the remaining worshippers abducted during a Sunday attack on churches in the Kurmin Wali community, Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The assault occurred when armed men stormed three churches during worship services, firing sporadically to instil fear before abducting worshippers and leading them into nearby forests.

Initially, at least 177 people were reportedly kidnapped, while around 80 managed to escape and took refuge in neighbouring villages.

Confirming the development on Thursday, Kurmin Wali Village Head Ishaku Dan’azumi said he received word that the abducted worshippers had been released and were now with the Kaduna State Government.

“I got the information of their release this morning. They are currently with the government in Kaduna,” he said, adding that he was preparing to travel to meet the victims.

The Kaduna State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) also confirmed the release.

CAN Chairman Rev. Ma’aji Caleb said: “Glory be to God, my people are out. We hope to connect with them today. This was through our prayers and the efforts of the government.”

He did not confirm whether ransom had been paid, emphasising that the priority was the safety of the worshippers.

A senior police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the release on Wednesday night, but did not specify the number of victims involved.

A community stakeholder also reported seeing empty buses and motorcycles moving through nearby bush areas late Wednesday, allegedly carrying the freed worshippers.

Following the attack, security agencies launched search-and-rescue operations, while local authorities and community leaders worked to account for the abductees and provide support to affected families.

Kajuru LGA has long been a hotspot for banditry in Kaduna State, with repeated attacks on religious centres and mass abductions despite ongoing military and police operations.

The incident highlights persistent security challenges in rural communities of Southern Kaduna.

Details regarding whether the bandits’ alleged demands, including motorcycles, were met remain unclear.
