Toni Kroos reacts to fake quotes wrongly attributed to Mikel Obi, defending his Real Madrid career as misinformation spreads online in Spain

Real Madrid legend Toni Kroos has responded sharply to fake quotes wrongly attributed to former Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi, after the statements resurfaced online and gained traction in Spain.

The fabricated remarks suggested Mikel had dismissed Kroos as an “average midfielder” whose success was due to playing for Real Madrid, and claimed that his trophies did not reflect genuine quality.

Mikel Obi had already denied making such comments in 2025, branding them false.

Despite this, the same lines circulated again on social media, translated into Spanish and widely shared by football pages.

Kroos took to his social media account to issue a pointed response: “So why didn’t you play for Real Madrid?” The statement was interpreted as a defence of his career, highlighting that reaching top clubs requires consistent skill and not merely reputation.

Neither Kroos nor Mikel have engaged further in the debate, but the incident underscores the ongoing challenges of misinformation in the digital age.

Kroos’ career included starring roles for Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, where he won multiple league titles and six Champions League trophies, as well as lifting the 2014 World Cup with Germany.

Mikel, meanwhile, enjoyed a decorated career at Chelsea, winning two Premier League titles, a Champions League, and captaining Nigeria to the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations triumph.
