Seplat Energy to halt gas production for four days, NNPC warns of temporary electricity impact as routine maintenance takes place across pipelines

Seplat Energy Plc, joint venture partner of NNPC Ltd, will suspend operations at its gas production facilities from February 12 to 15, 2026, for routine maintenance, the national oil company announced on Thursday.

Andy Odeh stated that the maintenance forms part of standard industry safety and asset integrity protocols, aimed at ensuring reliability, operational efficiency, and safe operation of critical gas infrastructure.

The temporary shutdown is expected to reduce gas supply to power generation companies connected to the NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company Limited (NGIC) pipeline network, which supplies most thermal power plants and industrial customers nationwide.

Electricity output may be modestly affected during the maintenance period, according to the statement.

Nigeria’s electricity sector relies heavily on gas-fired plants, which account for more than 70 per cent of installed generation capacity.

Even short-term disruptions in gas supply can lead to generation shortfalls and prompt load management measures.

To mitigate potential impacts, NNPC said it is working with Seplat Energy to ensure the maintenance is completed safely and on schedule.

NNPC Gas Marketing Limited is also engaging alternative suppliers to fill potential gaps and stabilise the network.

“Upon completion of the maintenance exercise, full gas supply into the NGIC system is expected to resume promptly, enabling affected power generation companies to return to normal operations,” the statement added.

The maintenance highlights the close link between upstream gas operations and electricity supply stability, underscoring the need for continued investment in infrastructure, redundancy, and diversified energy sources to reduce vulnerabilities in the grid.

The notice comes as the Federal Government pushes its “Decade of Gas” initiative, aimed at expanding gas utilisation nationwide.
