Reno Omokri says real-time election results are impossible, citing no country currently has fully electronic vote transmission systems

Former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has stated in Abuja on Thursday, February 27, 2026, that no country in the world currently implements real-time electronic transmission of election results.

Omokri, speaking in response to opposition leaders’ rejection of the recently assented Electoral Act 2026, said that demands for immediate online results are unrealistic and technically unachievable.

“I challenge Senator David Mark, Dr Ajuji Ahmed and everyone at that press conference to name just one country that has real-time electronic transmission of election results,” Omokri said. “Even in the United States, where Starlink originates, such a system does not exist. The perception of real-time results often comes from media projections based on exit polls, not official outcomes.”

Omokri warned that relying solely on media projections could be misleading, referencing the 2000 U.S. presidential election, where an incorrect media projection led to a premature concession that had to be withdrawn.

While affirming the potential benefits of electronic transmission, Omokri emphasised that its real-time implementation remains unfeasible.

He urged opposition figures to recognise the technical limitations rather than contesting the amended law on unrealistic grounds.

The Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2026, recently signed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, had faced criticism from leaders of opposition parties, including the African Democratic Congress and the New Nigeria Peoples Party, who described the law as anti-democratic.

Omokri concluded by asserting that structured and reliable election systems, rather than unrealistic real-time expectations, should be the focus of political discourse to safeguard credible elections in Nigeria.
