Residents of Plateau State warn of potential post-Ramadan violence after a Facebook threat by Sharfadeen Bature, calling on security agencies to act swiftly

Residents of Plateau State, particularly in Jos North LGA and other predominantly Muslim areas, have raised concerns over a social media post threatening violence after the Ramadan fasting period.

The threat was posted on Facebook by Sharfadeen Bature following a series of attacks in Barkin Ladi and Riyom last week, which left several people, both Christians and Muslims, dead.

In his post, Bature wrote that Muslims would seek revenge for the killing of four Muslim traders at Dorowa-Babuje in Barkin Ladi during the recent violence. Writing in Hausa, he stated:

“Bayan azumi, zamu shirya cin kutumar ubansu, koma ya koma yankinsa,”

which translates to:

“After fasting, we will deal with them. Everyone should return to their region.”

The post has sparked widespread concern among residents, who have urged security agencies to intervene immediately.

• Edward Nanle: “These are the type of people who ignite crisis in this state and cause religious crisis. But the funny thing is that he will not be arrested and prosecuted.”
• Funom Peter: “The security agencies should pick up this guy and get to the root of this because he may be speaking the minds of a larger group. They may be planning to attack Christians after the fasting and they do not make empty threats.”
• Istifanus Bitrus: “And security operatives will pretend not to see this. This is a very serious threat and this man should be arrested immediately.”
• Ibrahim Bako: “And this guy is still walking free? I am sure if it were a Christian who made this threat, he would have been picked up since.”
• Ezekiel Gyang: “And I am sure this man is still walking free. I pray he is arrested so he can reveal more.”

Residents’ concerns come amid heightened insecurity in Plateau State, which has experienced repeated violent incidents targeting both Christians and Muslims. Authorities have been called upon to act swiftly to prevent any escalation of conflict following the Ramadan period.
