Gayton McKenzie criticises Morocco over 2026 WAFCON uncertainty and offers South Africa as alternative host

South Africa’s Sports Minister, Gayton McKenzie, criticised Morocco on Wednesday for creating uncertainty over the hosting of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in North Africa.

The minister made the remarks in Pretoria while addressing the media on South Africa’s readiness to organise the tournament.

McKenzie expressed frustration that Morocco, initially confirmed as hosts, had not definitively committed to staging the competition.

The minister highlighted South Africa’s capability, citing its stadiums and experience from hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup and multiple continental tournaments.

“If Morocco is ready to host the WAFCON because they had a brilliant AFCON, they should do so,” McKenzie said. “But if they are not ready, we will not allow African women’s football to suffer.”

The uncertainty has followed criticism of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where some stakeholders claimed the hosts received preferential treatment.

McKenzie emphasised that South Africa would not be held hostage by countries with less infrastructure or readiness.

Confederation of African Football President, Patrice Motsepe, has yet to respond publicly to the allegations or clarify Morocco’s hosting intentions.

Analysts warn that any withdrawal could damage Morocco’s reputation as a future hub for international football events.

The potential disruption also raises concerns for teams preparing for WAFCON, including Nigeria’s women’s national football team, the Super Falcons, who aim to win an 11th continental title.
