Taraba Chief Judge Joel Agya reviews 35 inmate cases at Wukari Medium Security Custodial Centre, releasing some and granting bail to decongest the jail

The Chief Judge of Taraba State, Justice Joel Agya, reviewed 35 inmate cases on Tuesday at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Wukari as part of a jail delivery exercise.

The initiative aims to reduce overcrowding and ensure speedy justice for individuals awaiting trial. Of the 35 cases reviewed, 13 were pending in the High Court, while 22 were before lower courts.

Eight inmates were discharged, and several others granted bail.

Justice Agya highlighted the importance of safeguarding individual rights, ensuring no one remains in custody longer than legally permitted.

He urged magistrates to prioritise restorative justice through non-custodial sentencing where applicable.

The Controller of Nigerian Correctional Service, Francis John, commended the judiciary for the exercise, noting it helps reduce congestion and ensures fairness for economically disadvantaged inmates.

Governor Agbu Kefas was also acknowledged for supporting judicial reforms aimed at strengthening the justice system in the state.
