Manchester City title blow as West Ham hold Guardiola’s side to a 1-1 draw, leaving them nine points behind Arsenal in the Premier League race

Manchester City’s Premier League title challenge suffered a significant setback after a 1–1 draw against West Ham United at the London Stadium left Pep Guardiola’s side nine points behind league leaders Arsenal.

Manchester City took the lead through Bernardo Silva in the first half, but Konstantinos Mavropanos quickly restored parity for the hosts, ensuring both teams shared the points.

The result came only hours after Arsenal secured a dramatic 2–0 victory over Everton with two late goals, widening the gap at the top of the table.

Despite having a game in hand, the draw has intensified pressure on Guardiola’s team as the title race increasingly tilts in Arsenal’s favour.

Consecutive stalemates against relegation-threatened sides, including Nottingham Forest and West Ham, have exposed weaknesses in a squad that has undergone an expensive rebuild over the past 18 months.

City had dominated possession for long stretches but struggled to convert their control into clear scoring opportunities. Silva’s opener in the 31st minute came from an attempted cross that unexpectedly looped past goalkeeper Mads Hermansen and into the far corner.

However, West Ham responded just four minutes later when Mavropanos headed home from Jarrod Bowen’s corner after a costly misjudgement by City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Erling Haaland endured another frustrating outing, continuing a worrying drought that has seen the Norwegian striker score just three goals in his last 12 league appearances.

City pressed forward in the second half, with substitute Rayan Cherki and winger Jeremy Doku introduced in an attempt to spark a breakthrough, but West Ham held firm.

The result lifted West Ham out of the relegation zone for the first time in 100 days, placing them one point above Nottingham Forest, who still have a game in hand.

For City, the timing of the draw adds further pressure ahead of a demanding run of fixtures. Guardiola’s side must overturn a 3–0 deficit against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League round-of-16 second leg before facing Arsenal in the League Cup final and Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter-finals.
