FC Barcelona delivered a dominant performance to defeat Newcastle United 7-2 at Camp Nou, sealing an emphatic 8-3 aggregate victory to reach the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.

Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha each scored twice as the Catalan side overwhelmed their English opponents with a relentless attacking display.

Lamine Yamal, Marc Bernal and Fermín López also found the net in a high-scoring encounter that underlined Barcelona’s attacking strength.

Manager Hansi Flick praised his team’s second-half response after a competitive opening period. Barcelona led 3-2 at the break before asserting full control following the restart.

“With the fans supporting us like that for 90 minutes, it’s hard to beat us at home,” Raphinha said after the match.

The hosts took an early lead when Raphinha finished after a brilliant run and assist from Lamine Yamal. Newcastle responded quickly through Anthony Elanga, who capitalised on a well-worked move to level the score.

Barcelona regained the advantage through Marc Bernal, but defensive lapses allowed Newcastle to equalise again, with Anthony Elanga grabbing his second after capitalising on a costly error.

Despite missed chances from Lewandowski, Barcelona restored their lead before half-time when Lamine Yamal converted from the penalty spot after a foul by Kieran Trippier.

The second half turned into a procession as Fermín López extended the lead early on, effectively ending Newcastle’s resistance.

Lewandowski then added two goals in quick succession, showing his experience and composure in front of goal.

Raphinha capped his outstanding performance by punishing a defensive error to complete the rout.

Fans at Camp Nou celebrated with a wave as Barcelona recorded one of their biggest wins since the stadium’s reopening, boosting hopes of another European triumph.

Barcelona, five-time European champions, are now aiming to lift the trophy for the first time since 2015. By contrast, Newcastle’s bid to reach their first-ever quarter-final ended in disappointment.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe admitted his side struggled mentally after conceding late in the first half and early in the second.

“Our performance dropped in the second half,” Eddie Howe said. “It became a very difficult game after that.”
