President Tinubu expands CNG initiative to include electric vehicles, boosting Nigeria’s clean mobility strategy and nationwide vehicle conversions

President Bola Tinubu has approved the expansion of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PiCNG) to include electric vehicles, a move aimed at repositioning the initiative for nationwide clean mobility.

The initiative will now operate as the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (PiCNG & EV), leading and coordinating Nigeria’s clean transport strategy.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed in a statement on Thursday that PiCNG & EV will continue deploying CNG infrastructure, including Mother and Daughter Stations, Integrated Refuelling Units, vehicles, and conversion programmes, while also developing EV charging networks and related investments.

President Tinubu has directed the Executive Chairman of PiCNG & EV to implement a coordinated process for the rapid deployment of vehicle conversion kits, ensuring affordability for Nigerians.

The initiative will collaborate with CreditCorp Nigeria, financial institutions, and relevant partners to design accessible financing solutions for vehicle conversions.

The President also mandated the accelerated rollout of Mobile Refuelling Units to enhance CNG accessibility while permanent infrastructure expands.

According to Onanuga, CNG remains a strategic fuel leveraging Nigeria’s abundant gas resources, reducing costs, strengthening energy security, and conserving foreign exchange.

Launched in 2023, the PiCNG initiative aims to mitigate the impact of petrol subsidy removal and promote cleaner transport alternatives.

Nigeria holds over 200 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, positioning CNG as a cost-effective option for vehicle power.

The initiative targets converting one million vehicles nationwide to CNG while integrating electric vehicles into the national mobility framework.
