Plateau attack death toll Jos rises above 30 after deadly Angwan Rukuba violence, with dozens injured and victims still being recovered

The death toll from Sunday night’s attack on Gari Yawaye community in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State has risen to more than 30, according to local residents and community leaders.

Philip Markus, a youth leader in the affected community, disclosed this in a telephone interview on Tuesday morning, noting that additional fatalities were recorded after several injured victims succumbed to their wounds while receiving medical care.

Markus said that following the attack, about 12 bodies were initially recovered from different parts of the community.

The injured victims were taken to several medical facilities, including Jos University Teaching Hospital, Bingham University Teaching Hospital, and Plateau State Specialist Hospital, as well as other private hospitals.

He explained that despite efforts by medical personnel, some of the injured victims later died due to the severity of their conditions.

Additional searches within the community also led to the discovery of five more bodies in different locations.

Markus described the situation as deeply distressing, stressing that the number of casualties could still rise as more information emerges and recovery efforts continue.

He noted that over 100 people sustained injuries during the attack, many of them requiring urgent medical attention.

The escalation in fatalities has heightened concern among residents, many of whom remain unsettled as they continue to account for missing persons and assess the full extent of the damage caused by the assault.

The incident in Angwan Rukuba adds to a series of violent episodes in Plateau State, a region that has experienced recurring security challenges in recent times, prompting renewed calls for improved protection of lives and property.
