The former Argentina international and ex-Barcelona midfielder, who took charge of the David Beckham-owned club in January 2025, said his decision was driven by personal reasons, according to a statement released by Inter Miami CF.

Inter Miami, which also features Lionel Messi, has endured a difficult opening to the new campaign, suffering more defeats than wins and slipping to 10th place in the 30-team MLS standings.

The club opened the season with a 3-0 defeat to Los Angeles and was also eliminated from the CONCACAF Champions Cup by Nashville, results that intensified pressure on the coaching setup.

In recent league fixtures, Inter Miami managed only three draws in their last four matches, further highlighting their struggles to maintain consistency after a turbulent start to the season.

Despite the early-season downturn, Mascherano leaves the club after a highly successful debut campaign in 2025, during which he guided Inter Miami to their first MLS Cup title and an Eastern Conference championship, marking a historic milestone for the franchise.

In an emotional farewell statement, Mascherano expressed gratitude to the club, players, staff, and supporters, describing his time in Miami as a memorable chapter in his coaching career.

“I want to let everyone know that, for personal reasons, I have decided to end my tenure as head coach of Inter Miami CF,” he said.

He praised the organisation for its support and acknowledged the contribution of players and fans in achieving what he described as unforgettable moments, including the club’s first major title success.

Inter Miami managing owner Jorge Mas paid tribute to Mascherano’s impact, describing him as an important figure in the club’s history and praising his professionalism and leadership.

“Javier will forever be part of this club’s history,” Jorge Mas said, noting his role in the team’s MLS Cup triumph and international progress.

Mascherano’s departure marks a sudden shift for a side that enjoyed a record-breaking 2025 season, scoring over 100 goals across competitions and making history at the FIFA Club World Cup by becoming the first MLS team to reach the knockout stage.
