American tennis player Hailey Baptiste produced a remarkable comeback on Wednesday at the Madrid Open, saving six match points to defeat world number one Aryna Sabalenka in a gripping quarter-final clash at the Caja Mágica.

Baptiste Sabalenka Madrid upset unfolded over more than two and a half hours as the 30th seed battled back from a set down to win 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6), ending Sabalenka’s 15-match winning streak in a dramatic fashion.

Sabalenka, the defending champion, had appeared in control after taking the opening set with authority. However, Baptiste responded strongly in the second set, breaking serve multiple times to level the contest and shift momentum.

The decisive set delivered high tension, with Sabalenka edging ahead 5-4 and later earning multiple match points. Yet Baptiste showed resilience under pressure, saving five match points in that stretch before forcing a final-set tie-break.

Even in the tie-break, Sabalenka created another opportunity to close out the match, but Baptiste responded with composure, winning three consecutive points to complete one of the biggest victories of her career.

After the match, Baptiste credited her tactical adjustments and aggressive approach, particularly her willingness to vary play and disrupt Sabalenka’s rhythm at key moments.

Sabalenka acknowledged the contest swung after early errors in the second set, admitting Baptiste “played really brave tennis” when it mattered most.

The American now advances to the semi-finals, where she will face world number nine Mirra Andreeva after the Russian’s straight-sets win over Leylah Fernandez.
