Athletic Club Edin Terzic appointment confirmed as German coach replaces Ernesto Valverde on a two-year deal ahead of new La Liga season

Spanish La Liga side Athletic Club have officially appointed German tactician Edin Terzic as their new head coach on a two-year contract, marking the beginning of a new era at San Mamés.

The appointment was confirmed on Tuesday, with the 43-year-old set to take charge at the start of next season and be formally unveiled during the summer.

He replaces Ernesto Valverde, who announced in March that he would step down after four years in charge.

Terzic arrives in Bilbao following two managerial spells at Borussia Dortmund, where he earned widespread recognition for steering the club through competitive domestic and European campaigns.

His tenure included winning the German Cup in 2021, narrowly missing out on the Bundesliga title in 2023, and reaching the UEFA Champions League final in 2024.

His departure from Dortmund came after a defeat to Real Madrid at Wembley, after which he stepped away from management.

Athletic have now acted swiftly to secure his services as they look to inject fresh tactical direction and European experience into the squad.

The club had also been linked with a possible return for Andoni Iraola, who is set to leave AFC Bournemouth this summer, but ultimately opted for Terzic in what signals a shift towards a new footballing vision.

Before his success at Dortmund, Terzic gained experience as an assistant coach at Beşiktaş and West Ham United, working under Slaven Bilić and building a strong foundation across European football.
