Former Super Eagles striker Victor Ikpeba has criticised both Video Assistant Referee decisions and Arsenal’s physical approach following their controversial 1-0 victory over West Ham United in the Premier League on Sunday at the London Stadium.

Ikpeba questions Arsenal VAR controversy came after Arsenal secured a hard-fought win courtesy of Leandro Trossard, whose 83rd-minute strike proved decisive in a tense encounter that had significant implications in the title race.

Arsenal’s victory was later overshadowed by late drama when West Ham United thought they had rescued a stoppage-time equaliser through Callum Wilson, only for the goal to be disallowed following a VAR review.

The decision followed objections from Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya, prompting referee Chris Kavanagh to consult the pitchside monitor.

After a lengthy review, the goal was ruled out due to a foul in the build-up.

Speaking on SuperSport’s Monday Night Football, Ikpeba launched a sharp critique of the decision-making process, arguing that VAR is failing to deliver consistency in the English Premier League.

He also questioned Arsenal’s use of physicality during set-piece situations, suggesting that the club often goes unpunished for what he described as aggressive defensive tactics.

Ikpeba stated that Arsenal frequently apply pressure inside the box without facing consequences, adding that such incidents are often treated lightly by match officials.

Ikpeba raises concerns over Arsenal VAR incident further intensified debate around officiating standards, particularly the time taken to reach decisions during key match moments.

West Ham United are reportedly considering contacting the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) to seek clarification over the disallowed equaliser, according to BBC reports.
