Arthur Okonkwo says he is excited about a possible Super Eagles debut after switching allegiance from England to Nigeria ahead of upcoming fixtures

New Nigeria goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has expressed excitement over a potential debut for the Super Eagles, as he awaits a possible call-up for upcoming international fixtures including the Unity Cup and friendly matches against Portugal and Poland.

Born in Camden to Nigerian parents, Okonkwo recently became eligible to represent Nigeria after FIFA approved his international switch from England last month.

The Wrexham shot-stopper previously featured for England at youth level during his time at Arsenal, including appearances for the Under-18 team.

According to reports, his decision to switch allegiance followed discussions with Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle during the Unity Cup period in June 2025, a tournament Nigeria eventually won.

Speaking in a Nigeria Football Federation-branded video, Okonkwo expressed his enthusiasm about the possibility of representing the country at senior level.

“It’s an honour being given the opportunity to play for your country. I am so excited, I can’t wait. To finally have the opportunity is incredible,” he said.

The 24-year-old joins a competitive goalkeeping pool for Nigeria, which includes Stanley Nwabali, Francis Uzoho, Amas Obasogie, Maduka Okoye and teenage prospect Ebenezer Harcourt.

Okonkwo developed through Arsenal’s academy system and later gained experience on loan at Crewe Alexandra and Sturm Graz before joining Wrexham, initially on loan in 2023, with the move made permanent a year later.

He has since become Wrexham’s first-choice goalkeeper, making 121 appearances and playing a key role in two promotions.

This season, he featured in 44 matches across all competitions, keeping 10 clean sheets as the club narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League.
