Guillermo Ochoa is set to make history as the first goalkeeper to appear in six World Cups after being named in Mexico’s squad

Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa has been named in the national squad, setting the stage for a historic sixth appearance at the FIFA World Cup.

The 40-year-old shot-stopper, who currently plays for Cypriot club AEL Limassol, is set to become the first goalkeeper in history to feature in six World Cup tournaments.

Ochoa’s inclusion places him alongside global icons Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, who are also preparing for their sixth appearances at football’s biggest stage.

Despite his remarkable longevity, Ochoa is expected to play a limited role in the tournament after slipping down the pecking order in recent years.

He made his World Cup debut in Germany in 2006 and has since remained a consistent presence in Mexico’s squad across multiple editions of the competition.

Mexico’s squad also includes experienced forwards Raul Jimenez of Fulham and Santiago Gimenez of AC Milan, alongside several emerging talents and naturalised players.

The squad features Spain-born midfielder Alvaro Fidalgo and Colombia-born forward Julian Quinones, both of whom have become key figures under head coach Javier Aguirre.

Teenage midfielder Gilberto Mora has also been included and is set to become the youngest player ever to represent Mexico at a World Cup.

For Aguirre, the tournament marks his third World Cup as head coach, having previously led the team in 2002 and 2010.

Mexico will open their campaign against South Africa on June 11 in Mexico City before facing South Korea and the Czech Republic in the group stage.

The team will be aiming to improve on previous performances and advance beyond the group stage, a feat they have not achieved in recent tournaments despite strong home support.
