Suspects allegedly confessed to killing a fellow Nigerian in Tamale after accusing him of withholding proceeds from suspected internet fraud

The Ghana Police Service says it will prosecute two Nigerian nationals, Daniel Victor Eze and David Oko Ewa, over the alleged murder of Nkemujika Uzorchuku Eze, a 36-year-old Nigerian, following claims that the victim withheld proceeds from suspected internet fraud activities.

The Ghana Police Murder Case began after officers from the Northern Regional Police Command discovered the victim’s body inside his residence at Sanzirigu, a community in Tamale, on Saturday.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Regional Public Relations Unit of the Ghana Police Service, preliminary investigations showed that the deceased lived in a three-bedroom apartment with his wife, Peace Uzorchuku, the two suspects and another Nigerian national identified as Godwin Nwafor.

Police said officers were alerted after receiving a report that the victim had been found lying motionless in a pool of blood inside his bedroom.

Investigators who examined the scene found that the deceased had sustained a deep cut to the forehead, while a towel had been forced into his mouth. The room had also been ransacked.

“Police investigations commenced after a report was received that the deceased had been found lying motionless in a pool of blood in his bedroom.

“A team of investigators immediately visited the scene, where examination revealed that the deceased had sustained a deep cut wound to the forehead, while a towel had been stuffed into his mouth. The room had also been ransacked.

“The body was conveyed to the Tamale Teaching Hospital, where he was confirmed dead by a medical officer before being deposited at the hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy,” the statement said.

Police also recovered a wooden pestle believed to have been used in the attack, along with other materials now undergoing forensic examination.

The command said intelligence-led operations led to the arrest of the two suspects later the same day at Tatale, where they were allegedly attempting to cross into the Republic of Togo through the Tatale border route.

According to the police, the suspects allegedly admitted during interrogation that they conspired to kill the deceased after accusing him of withholding money obtained from internet fraud activities.

“During interrogation, the suspects allegedly admitted conspiring to murder the deceased after claiming that he had been withholding proceeds they had obtained through internet fraud activities,” the statement added.

Following the arrests, investigators conducted a search that resulted in the recovery of several items believed to have been taken from the victim’s residence. The exhibits include multiple mobile phones, laptop computers, a tablet, jewellery, clothing, wristwatches, personal documents and other valuables.

The suspects remain in police custody and are expected to be arraigned before a court as investigations continue.

The Ghana Police Service said it remains committed to ensuring that everyone connected with the alleged crime is brought before the courts while encouraging members of the public to continue providing credible information to assist law enforcement agencies.

The case has attracted attention within both Ghana and Nigeria because it involves Nigerian nationals residing abroad and allegations linked to suspected cybercrime.

However, the claims regarding internet fraud and the alleged confession remain part of the police investigation and have not yet been tested in court. Under Ghanaian law, the suspects are presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a competent court.
