Toyin Amuzu Free Gas Distribution supports 600 Abeokuta South residents as the PDP candidate seeks to ease household costs amid economic hardship

Toyin Anthony Amuzu, the Peoples Democratic Party candidate for Abeokuta South Federal Constituency in the 2027 House of Representatives election, has distributed free 4kg cooking gas cylinders to 600 residents as part of an intervention programme aimed at reducing household pressures.

The beneficiaries, mostly women from the Ijeja area of Abeokuta, received the cylinders through the Toyin Amuzu Foundation in a programme that ran from the morning until the afternoon.

The initiative comes amid rising concerns over the cost of living and the increasing difficulty many households face in meeting daily expenses, particularly those relying on liquefied petroleum gas for cooking.

Speaking during the distribution, Amuzu said the programme was designed to provide immediate support to families while recognising that wider economic challenges require sustainable policy solutions.

“We previously supported commercial motorcycle riders and taxi drivers with free fuel. This cooking gas programme is intended to assist households that depend on gas for cooking. We recognise that different groups have different needs and we will continue to design interventions that respond to those needs as resources permit,” he said.

The Distribution followed an earlier intervention by his foundation, which provided free fuel to commercial transport operators in Abeokuta South to help reduce transportation costs.

Amuzu said such initiatives were not a complete solution to Nigeria’s economic difficulties but were intended to provide temporary relief while longer-term measures are pursued.

“Our philosophy is to help people acquire the means to earn a sustainable livelihood rather than depend indefinitely on relief materials. We want to teach people how to catch fish instead of merely giving them fish,” he added.

The PDP candidate said that if elected in 2027, he would focus on policies aimed at strengthening social protection programmes, supporting economic empowerment and promoting community development.

He also highlighted electricity supply as a key factor in improving economic conditions, arguing that reliable power would reduce operating costs for small businesses, increase productivity and create employment opportunities.

Amuzu linked the issue to the development plans of the PDP governorship candidate in Ogun State, Chief Oladipupo Adebutu, whom he said prioritises improved electricity and infrastructure development.

Although he currently holds no elected or appointed political office, Amuzu said his foundation had carried out several community projects, including borehole construction, solar-powered streetlights, education support and business empowerment programmes.

Some beneficiaries welcomed the initiative, describing the cooking gas cylinders as timely assistance that would help reduce household expenses during a period of economic pressure.

The intervention also highlights the growing role of community-based support programmes in political engagement ahead of the 2027 election cycle, as candidates and parties seek to connect with voters through social and economic initiatives.
