FA backs Tuchel after England’s World Cup semi-final loss, with the manager expected to continue leading the team towards Euro 2028

The Football Association has reaffirmed its support for England manager Thomas Tuchel after the Three Lions suffered a 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final, ending hopes of reaching their first men’s World Cup final since 1966.

England took an early lead in the tense encounter before Argentina scored twice late in the match to secure a place in Sunday’s final against Spain.

Despite criticism surrounding some of Tuchel’s tactical decisions, particularly his substitutions during the closing stages of the game, the FA has maintained confidence in the German coach and expects him to remain in charge through to UEFA Euro 2028.

The position was reinforced by FA Chief Executive Mark Bullingham, who praised the efforts of the manager, players and coaching staff following the painful defeat.

“It is heartbreaking to be so close. The players and Thomas gave it everything today and the squad, coaches and staff could not have worked harder during the tournament,” Bullingham told BBC Sport.

“I would like to thank them all, and also give my heartfelt thanks to our wonderful fans here in the USA and at home.”

Tuchel took charge of England in January 2025 after signing an initial 18-month contract aimed at guiding the national team towards World Cup success.

The former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager later agreed a two-year extension in February, keeping him tied to the project ahead of the European Championship hosted by England, Wales, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland in 2028.

Speaking after the semi-final defeat in Atlanta, Tuchel insisted he remains committed to leading England into the home Euros.

“We keep on going with the contract until the home Euros,” Tuchel said.

“I’m looking forward to that even though right now it’s difficult to look that far ahead.”

The German coach acknowledged the disappointment of missing out on the final but highlighted the significance of reaching the last four of the tournament.

“Of course, it’s a semi-final; a lot of big football nations are eliminated before the semi-final, so it is an achievement,” he said.

England will now face France in the third-place play-off on Saturday, with victory securing their best men’s World Cup finish since winning the tournament on home soil in 1966.

Although the semi-final defeat ended England’s immediate title hopes, the FA views the tournament campaign as progress under Tuchel and is already focused on preparations for Euro 2028.
