Manchester United get the chance to sign Tosin Adarabioyo from Chelsea as a rotational centre-back before the deadline

Manchester United have been offered the chance to sign Chelsea centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo before the summer deadline, transfer journalist Ben Jacobs has reported, as Michael Carrick looks beyond a midfield rebuild after a 2-0 opening-weekend defeat to Hull City.

United have already brought in Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba from Premier League clubs.

With only a few days left in the window, the club may now turn to other gaps. Mr Jacobs said Chelsea have opened the door for Tosin to join as a rotational option.

Tosin, 28, has made 38 Premier League appearances since joining Chelsea from Fulham on a free transfer in 2024.

He was left out of the matchday squad for Chelsea’s 3-2 win over Fulham on Monday. He came close to a United move in 2024 before choosing Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have already added Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace for £52 million and are close to signing Atalanta’s Honest Ahanor for about £30 million.

That surplus at centre-back helps explain why a player who arrived only two years ago could be available.

United have also looked at a left-back to compete with Luke Shaw. No fee, personal terms or medical have been confirmed for Tosin. The report describes an opportunity, not a completed transfer.

Whether United sign Tosin before the deadline will turn on Carrick’s defensive priorities, Chelsea’s asking price and how much of the remaining budget is still earmarked for full-back cover. For now the green light, if it holds, is only the first step.
