Napoli confirm McTominay heart surgery after a mild, benign arrhythmia, with the midfielder expected to return after the international break

Scott McTominay, the 29-year-old Napoli midfielder, is set to undergo corrective heart surgery in the coming days after developing a mild, benign arrhythmia, Napoli confirmed on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.

The Italian champions said McTominay would undergo a cardiac arrhythmia ablation using pulsed field ablation, or PFA, a procedure intended to correct the irregular heart rhythm.

“Following the onset of a mild benign arrhythmia, Scott McTominay will undergo corrective surgery using a cardiac arrhythmia ablation (PFA) in the coming days,” Napoli said in a statement.

The club added that McTominay is expected to be available again after the international break, offering some reassurance about his anticipated recovery.

Arrhythmia refers to an abnormal or irregular heartbeat. In McTominay’s case, Napoli described the condition as mild and benign, meaning it is not considered life-threatening.

PFA is a relatively modern cardiac ablation technique in which controlled electrical energy is used to create tiny areas of scar tissue in the heart. The treated areas can interrupt abnormal electrical signals responsible for an irregular rhythm and help restore a more regular heartbeat.

The procedure means McTominay is likely to spend some time away from competitive football while he completes his treatment and recovery.

The timing is significant for Napoli, with McTominay having established himself as an important part of the club’s midfield since joining from Manchester United.

The Scotland international moved to Napoli in 2024 and quickly became a key figure in the side. His energy, physical strength and ability to contribute in front of goal have made him an influential presence in midfield.

McTominay also played a major role in Napoli’s successful 2024/25 Serie A campaign, helping the club secure the Italian title.

His absence will therefore represent a notable setback for Napoli, although the club’s statement indicates that the midfielder’s condition has been identified and is being addressed through corrective treatment.

For McTominay, the immediate priority will be a successful procedure and a safe return to full fitness.

Napoli’s decision to disclose the diagnosis also provides clarity following concerns over the midfielder’s availability. The club has indicated that, barring complications, McTominay should be back after the international break.

The development will nevertheless be closely monitored by Napoli and Scotland, particularly as McTominay remains an important player for the national team.
