Nissi says she sings better than her brother Burna Boy, claiming he agrees while acknowledging his edge over her as a rapper

Nigerian singer and artist Jehovah-Nissi Ogulu has sparked a lively debate after claiming that she is a better singer than her brother, Grammy-winning musician Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, during a recent interview with Cool FM.

Nissi said Burna Boy agrees with her assessment of their respective singing abilities, although she acknowledged that her brother has the advantage when it comes to rapping.

“I am better than Burna Boy at singing and almost everything. He is only better than me at rapping,” Nissi said.

She added that the siblings had discussed the matter themselves and reached the same conclusion about their vocal abilities.

“We both actually agreed on the fact that I was a better singer,” she said.

The confident assessment has naturally invited attention because of Burna Boy’s status as one of Nigeria’s most internationally recognised music stars.

The singer, songwriter and performer has built a career around a distinctive blend of Afrobeats, dancehall, reggae and hip-hop influences, earning international awards and a Grammy for his 2020 album, Twice as Tall.

Nissi, meanwhile, has been developing her own musical identity since making her singing debut in September 2016 with the release of her first single, Pay Attention.

Although she is widely recognised as Burna Boy’s younger sister, Nissi has pursued a career separate from her brother’s enormous global profile.

Her music has included collaborations with prominent Nigerian artists such as Olamide and Fireboy DML, while her performances and releases have continued to establish her presence within the Nigerian music scene.

Her latest comments appear to be more playful sibling competition than an attempt to diminish Burna Boy’s achievements.

By limiting her concession to her brother’s rapping ability, Nissi presented the comparison as a friendly assessment of their individual strengths.

The remarks have nevertheless given fans another glimpse into the relationship between two members of the Ogulu family who have both built careers in entertainment.

While Burna Boy has become a dominant figure on the global Afrobeats stage, Nissi has continued to carve out her own artistic path.
