Toluwanisings’ death controversy deepens as Tope Alabi, Woli Agba and Dele Omo Woli threaten legal action over allegations circulating online

The death of Nigerian gospel singer Olayemi Bayonile Bolaji, popularly known as Toluwanisings, has prompted mounting controversy in Ibadan, Oyo State, following reports of difficulties obtaining emergency medical care, disputed claims circulating on social media and threats of legal action from fellow gospel artistes Tope Alabi, Ayobami Ajewole, known as Woli Agba, and Olamide Oladimeji, popularly called Dele Omo Woli.

The singer died on 14 October 2026, aged 41, according to a family announcement, but the circumstances surrounding his death have not been officially established in the reports reviewed.

The growing dispute has placed the late singer’s family and colleagues at the centre of public attention, with questions about emergency healthcare access increasingly intertwined with concerns over the spread of unverified allegations online.

The family confirmed Toluwanisings’ death in a statement published on his social media accounts on 14 October.

The announcement described him as a beloved husband, family member and gospel minister, while asking the public to remember his wife and loved ones in their prayers.

The family did not disclose a medical cause of death or announce funeral arrangements in the initial statement. Channels Television and The Guardian Nigeria reported the announcement.

According to accounts circulated after his death, Toluwanisings reportedly slumped at his residence in Ibadan after complaining of tiredness.

The incident was said to have occurred hours after he attended In His Presence, a worship programme hosted by gospel singer Bidemi Olaoba.

The precise sequence of events remains incompletely documented. Reports attributed to his associates and entertainment industry figures alleged that attempts to obtain medical assistance involved visits to multiple hospitals.

His personal assistant, Babadunni Olayemi, reportedly claimed that between seven and eight hospitals were approached, with some allegedly failing to provide treatment.

However, the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, said it had no official record indicating that the singer had been brought to the facility for treatment, according to the supplied report.

That distinction is important: allegations of hospital rejection have attracted public concern, but the available information does not establish which hospitals were approached, the circumstances of each encounter or whether any refusal directly contributed to his death.

The family’s announcement did not establish a cause of death, and no publicly confirmed medical finding has been identified in the reports reviewed.

It would therefore be premature to draw conclusions about responsibility for the singer’s passing.

The controversy has also taken a more confrontational turn, with prominent gospel entertainers warning that they will pursue legal remedies against people accused of circulating allegations linking them to the death.

Gospel singer Tope Alabi is among those seeking redress. Her solicitors, Oakmount Legal Practitioners, issued a cease-and-desist notice dated 24 October 2026 to the operator of the Facebook page Pastor Tayo Ministries, identified in reports as Canada-based pastor Tayo Kumuyi.

According to reports by Punch Newspapers and Premium Times, the notice demanded the removal of disputed publications, a retraction and a public apology within 24 hours.

The lawyers alleged that posts published between 20 and 24 October had linked Alabi to murder and ritual killing claims involving Toluwanisings and other gospel ministers.

Alabi’s legal representatives described the allegations as false and defamatory.

They warned that failure to comply could lead to court proceedings seeking remedies that may include damages and injunctions.

The notice also made clear that the demand was not intended to prevent truthful reporting, lawful investigation or legitimate commentary protected by law.

The issuance of a legal notice does not, by itself, establish that a lawsuit has been filed or that a court has determined the allegations to be defamatory.

As of the reports reviewed, the threatened proceedings against the page operator had not been confirmed as filed. Punch Newspapers reported the notice and its demands.

Woli Agba and Dele Omo Woli have also threatened legal action over claims allegedly linking them to the singer’s death.

Their solicitors, Gemgold Solicitors, issued a joint notice warning individuals, bloggers and media platforms against originating or recirculating what the entertainers described as false and damaging allegations.

The notice warned that those who continued to publish the disputed claims could face legal proceedings, including applications for injunctive relief and claims for damages, where justified by the evidence and applicable law.

The solicitors also urged social media users to verify information before sharing it.

The response from the three entertainers highlights the potential consequences of presenting unverified allegations about serious crimes as established fact.

It also underlines the distinction between responsible public discussion of a death and the circulation of accusations that may damage an individual’s reputation.

The legal threats have emerged alongside reports of a separate disagreement within Toluwanisings’ family over his burial arrangements.

His father, Muniru Adekunle Olayemi, was reported to have expressed a preference for burying his son at a house the singer had built or taking his remains to Ikirun, Osun State, where he could be laid to rest beside his late mother. The widow was reportedly said to favour a cemetery or church burial.

The account available does not include a full response from the widow, and the disagreement has not been independently established as a formal legal dispute.

The family’s final decision and any confirmed burial arrangements remain matters requiring verification.

Toluwanisings’ death has also revived memories of a road accident involving the singer and members of his crew several months earlier. In July 2026, the singer shared images of a damaged vehicle after the group reportedly survived an incident involving a fully loaded trailer while returning from a gospel ministration.

The earlier accident was reported by The Guardian Nigeria, but the available reporting provides no evidence linking it to his death in October. The two events should therefore be treated separately unless further evidence establishes a connection.

Beyond the immediate controversy, the reported difficulties in obtaining urgent medical attention have raised broader questions about emergency response and access to healthcare in Nigeria.

When a patient experiences a sudden medical collapse, delays in reaching appropriate care can become a matter of public concern.

Establishing what happened in this case, however, requires reliable medical records, statements from the facilities involved and, where appropriate, an official investigation.

The incident also illustrates the challenges facing public figures and their families when private grief unfolds under intense online scrutiny.

Social media can help communities express condolences and share verified information, but it can also amplify speculation before the facts are established.

For the late singer’s family, the priority remains mourning a husband, father and gospel minister.

For the entertainers who have threatened legal action, the immediate concern is the removal and correction of allegations they say have unfairly implicated them in a death.

As the situation develops, three questions remain distinct: what caused Toluwanisings’ death, what happened during the reported search for emergency medical assistance, and whether the individuals accused of spreading damaging claims will face formal legal proceedings.

None should be treated as settled without supporting evidence.

For now, the controversy surrounding Toluwanisings’ death remains unresolved. Verified information, fair reporting and respect for the bereaved will be essential as the family, healthcare institutions and those involved in the threatened legal actions respond to the questions that have followed his passing.
