Abuja court grants ₦2 million bail to a 27-year-old man arraigned over the alleged theft of goods worth ₦10.8 million

A Life Camp Magistrate’s Court in Abuja on Tuesday granted ₦2 million bail to a 27-year-old man, Douglas Josiah, who is standing trial over the alleged theft of goods valued at ₦10.8 million.

Josiah, a resident of Akarak Village in the Federal Capital Territory, was arraigned by the police on charges of criminal conspiracy, mischief and theft.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

Prosecuting counsel, Charity Nwachukwu, told the court that the complainant, Olushola Olayede, reported the incident at the Wuye Police Station on June 20.

According to the prosecution, Josiah and another suspect identified only as Suleiman, who remains at large, allegedly broke into the complainant’s 20-foot container without authorisation and carted away goods worth ₦10.8 million.

Nwachukwu told the court that the defendant made a confessional statement during the police investigation, admitting to the alleged offence.

She added that the charges were brought under Sections 287 and 327 of the Penal Code.

In her ruling, Magistrate Ramlatu Yusuf admitted Josiah to bail in the sum of ₦2 million with two sureties in like sum.

The court directed that one of the sureties must be a Grade Level 9 civil servant and that both sureties must provide valid means of identification.

The case was adjourned until August 17, 2026, for hearing.
