ADC calls for state of emergency in Katsina and Zamfara as mass killings continue to rock both states, leaving over 140 people dead in the past two months.

In a strongly worded statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, on Sunday, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) described the recent massacre in Malumfashi, Katsina State — where gunmen killed 30 worshippers in a mosque and burned 20 villagers alive — as proof of a collapsed security system.

“This evil act epitomizes the horrors that Nigerians have been forced to endure under this administration,” the party declared.

“It is also a damning proof of the total collapse of our national security architecture, which has prompted even the Chief of Defence Staff to ask citizens to learn how to defend themselves.”

The ADC accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of neglecting urgent security challenges while spending time abroad.

“Instead of confronting these urgent national tragedies with the seriousness they demand, President Tinubu continues to jet-set across the world chasing photo-ops, while his people are dying in dozens at home,” the statement read.

The party also condemned the President’s silence, noting he has not personally addressed the nation or families of victims. “This negligence would have been unthinkable in those countries the President loves to visit,” the ADC added.

Calling for urgent action, the party demanded that the federal government declare a state of emergency in Katsina and Zamfara until peace is restored.

It further urged a complete review of Nigeria’s defence system, saying the CDS’s remarks about self-defence were a powerful indicator of institutional failure.

The ADC also criticised PDP governors for holding a political meeting in Zamfara shortly after dozens of villagers were killed, describing it as “insensitive and out of place.”

“Instead of rallying around their colleague to help stop the orgy of killings, they chose to stage a political rally at the scene of mass murder,” Abdullahi said.

Concluding its statement, the ADC stressed that both APC and PDP had failed Nigerians: “Neither the ruling APC nor the incurably afflicted PDP care about the people and their suffering. They only care about power and politics.”
