ADC National Women Leader Naomi Lasara-Abel criticises growing political intolerance in Nigeria, calling for respect for all parties and a fair democratic process

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised alarm over the escalating intolerance of opposition politics in Nigeria, with its National Women Leader, Naomi Lasara-Abel, insisting that membership of parties like the ADC, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), or others should not attract stigma.

Speaking during a solidarity visit to former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, Lasara-Abel said, “I don’t know why, if you are in the ADC, PDP or any other party, you are seen as a sinner in Nigeria. It should come to an end.”

She emphasised that Nigerian women and youths are demanding a political environment where citizens can participate freely without fear or intimidation.

“The women and youth are calling with a loud voice that Nigeria should be stable. People should be allowed to do what they want as long as they are on the right path,” she said.

Lasara-Abel further stressed the importance of a level playing field in elections, noting that credible elections form the foundation for national development.

“You should be allowed to contest, vote and be voted for. If things are going right, you will not have opposition. And if you are confident in yourself, I don’t see why you should be jittery,” she added.

The ADC leader also warned that political suppression could prompt young Nigerians to seek opportunities abroad. “We should allow the country to flow the way it should, not for our youth to run away or japa,” she said, urging unity across political divides to rebuild the nation.

“We want Nigeria to be great again. Nigeria can be great again if we all come together and have a free, fair and credible Nigeria,” she concluded.

The visit to Malami follows his recent release from the Kuje Correctional Centre on money laundering charges.

He was previously arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) alongside his wife and son, and later granted bail of N200 million each by Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, pending trial over alleged terrorism financing and illegal possession of firearms.
