Africa’s Business Heroes grants offer $1.5m to African entrepreneurs building solutions in agriculture, fintech, healthcare and technology

Alibaba Philanthropy and the Jack Ma Foundation have launched the eighth edition of the Africa’s Business Heroes programme, offering 1.5 million dollars in grant funding to African entrepreneurs developing innovative solutions to critical challenges across the continent.

The initiative, unveiled on Tuesday under the theme Defining Africa’s Future Today, seeks to empower founders operating in sectors including climate-smart agriculture, digital finance, healthcare, logistics, manufacturing and emerging technologies.

Managing Director for Africa at Africa’s Business Heroes, Zahra Boateng-Baitie, said the programme is designed not only to provide financial support but also to strengthen entrepreneurial capacity capable of driving sustainable economic transformation.

Zahra Boateng-Baitie noted that Africa’s Business Heroes grants aim to equip entrepreneurs with mentorship, strategic guidance and global exposure needed to scale impactful ventures and generate employment opportunities.

“Africa’s future is being shaped by entrepreneurs who are addressing the continent’s most pressing challenges and unlocking its economic potential,” Boateng-Baitie said.

“Beyond the 1.5 million dollars in grant funding, ABH equips founders with the strategic support required to grow sustainable businesses and fuel inclusive growth.”

In a significant expansion for the 2026 edition, organisers announced that recognition will extend to the top 100 finalists, alongside increased on-the-ground engagement across ten African markets.

The programme will place special emphasis on under-represented countries such as Namibia, Tunisia and Zambia.

Top 10 finalists will also benefit from a fully sponsored learning and leadership experience at Alibaba’s global campus in Hangzhou, China, providing exposure to international business ecosystems and innovation networks.

Applications for the Africa’s Business Heroes grants are open to entrepreneurs who are African citizens or legal residents leading registered businesses with a minimum of three years’ operational track record and a demonstrated commitment to positive social impact.

Since its launch, the programme has attracted more than 30,000 applications annually, reinforcing its position as one of Africa’s most influential platforms supporting solution-driven entrepreneurship and business innovation.

Organisers expressed confidence that sustained investment in African-led enterprises could unlock powerful economic opportunities while strengthening local industries and long-term resilience across the continent.
