Air Peace flight delays hit Lagos routes after heavy rain. The airline urges calm as NCAA warns airlines over regulatory breaches

Air Peace flight delays disrupted travel schedules on Tuesday following a heavy downpour in Lagos State, the airline announced via a statement shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle.

The airline’s spokesperson, Osifo-Whiskey Efe, explained that several flights were delayed due to adverse weather conditions, which affected aircraft movements and airport ground operations.

“Dear Esteemed Customer, Due to the heavy downpour of rain in Lagos this morning, some flights across our operating networks will be delayed,” the statement read.

While acknowledging the inconvenience caused, Air Peace stressed that passenger safety remains its core commitment, urging travellers to bear with the temporary disruptions.

“While weather is beyond our control and safety remains our utmost priority, we appeal for your understanding as we manage the disruptions… and get you to your destinations safely,” the airline stated.

The company reaffirmed its dedication to upholding top safety and service standards, thanking customers for their trust and loyalty.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA)** has doubled down on enforcing passenger rights, warning that it will begin naming and shaming non-compliant airlines over flight delays and cancellations.

According to Michael Achimugu, NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, airlines are legally obligated to provide hotel accommodation if passengers are stranded due to delays or cancellations between 10:00pm and 4:00am.

“If an airline has kept passengers at the terminal up to midnight before cancelling a flight, they owe their passengers hotel accommodation,” Achimugu wrote on his verified handle.

He noted that the federal government had directed NCAA to apply “the fullest possible sanctions” for breaches of aviation regulations, particularly where airline staff go missing, leaving stranded passengers to be managed by NCAA officials alone.

Weather-related delays are classified as “beyond the airline’s control.”
However, passenger rights still apply when flights are delayed for non-weather reasons.

NCAA regulations enforce compensation, refreshments, hotel accommodation, and refunds depending on the delay length and time of day.
