Airline Operators of Nigeria hail Tinubu and Finance Minister Edun for suspending 4% import levy, saying it protects aviation and economic stability

Airline Operators of Nigeria have commended President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, for suspending the proposed four per cent Free on Board (FOB) levy on imports.

In a statement signed by AON President Abdulmunaf Sarina and released on Tuesday, the group described the move as a “clear demonstration of President Tinubu’s commitment to creating a business-friendly environment, protecting critical sectors of the economy, and promoting sustainable growth.”

The levy, introduced by Customs, had sparked outrage among manufacturers, importers, and clearing agents, who argued it would fuel inflation and erode Nigeria’s competitiveness.

Minister Edun said the suspension was necessary to protect trade facilitation, economic stability, and the nation’s business climate.

According to AON, the levy would have had severe consequences for airlines, raising operational costs in a sector already battling multiple economic challenges.

It warned that such a policy could have threatened job security, service delivery, and the overall competitiveness of Nigeria’s aviation industry.

The operators praised Edun’s “exemplary leadership as a listening Minister,” noting that his responsiveness to stakeholders reflected deep patriotism and a commitment to fairness, diligence, and national development.

“This bold and thoughtful intervention will go a long way in safeguarding the aviation sector, protecting jobs, reducing inflationary pressures, and ensuring that Nigeria remains competitive in the global business environment,” the statement read.

The group also reaffirmed its readiness to collaborate with the Federal Government on policies to strengthen aviation, pledging support for the President’s broader economic agenda.
