Airtel Africa detects 205 million spam messages using AI, reducing SMS spam by 12% across 13 markets and 84% in Nigeria alone

Airtel Africa detects spam messages across 13 of its 14 markets using its AI-powered service Spam Alert, flagging over 205 million unwanted SMS in just six months.

The innovative tool, available at no cost to subscribers, identifies spam messages in real time, prefixing them with “SPAM ALERT” to help users avoid potential scams—without the need for third-party applications.

Launched in Nigeria, Kenya, Zambia, Uganda, Gabon, Congo Brazzaville, Malawi, Madagascar, DRC, Rwanda, Tanzania, Chad, and Niger, the Spam Alert service is set to debut in Seychelles next.

Kenya topped the list with over 68 million spam SMS flagged, followed by Tanzania with 47 million and Zambia with 33 million.

Nigeria, while not leading in volume, recorded the highest reduction in spam—an impressive 84% drop.

Across all markets, Airtel recorded an average 12% decrease in spam traffic, highlighting the effectiveness of its AI-driven efforts.

The Spam Alert system relies on Artificial Intelligence to scan and categorise SMS messages based on sender patterns, frequency, and behaviour—flagging suspicious content instantly.
