Lagos State inaugurates committee to plan the Akran of Badagry celebration, ensuring a memorable tribute to the late monarch’s life and legacy

Lagos State Government has formally inaugurated a planning committee to oversee the celebration of the life and legacy of the late Akran of Badagry, His Royal Majesty Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I.

The inauguration, disclosed in a statement by the state government on Tuesday, was conducted at the Akran’s Palace in Jegba, Badagry, on behalf of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu by Secretary to the State Government, Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin.

Governor Sanwo-Olu tasked the committee members to approach their duties with unity, clarity of purpose, and determination to deliver a unique and memorable tribute befitting the revered monarch.

Chairing the committee, Salu-Hundeyin expressed gratitude for the governor’s confidence in its members and highlighted Badagry’s significance in the state’s affairs.

She urged full cooperation among committee members to ensure a historic celebration.

“Every member of the Committee is important, in line with the inclusivity pillar of the THEMES Plus Development Agenda,” Salu-Hundeyin said.

She added that the committee’s resolutions would be documented in the State Gazette and presented to the Governor for ratification.

Representing the royal family, Princess Adetola Akran-Oketunde thanked Governor Sanwo-Olu for his support, describing the initiative as a fitting tribute to the late monarch’s enduring legacy.

The inaugural meeting was attended by local government chairmen, traditional and religious leaders, and the Lagos State House of Assembly member representing Badagry Constituency I, Hon. Solomon Bonu.

The late Akran of Badagry, Wheno Menu-Toyi, passed away in January 2026 at the age of 89.

His 48-year reign was marked by active involvement in the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs and significant contributions to cultural preservation, community unity, and the development of Badagry.
