Anambra State Police report significant reduction in kidnapping, armed robbery, and cult-related activities in 2025, citing proactive policing and community partnerships

The Anambra State Police Command has recorded a significant reduction in violent crimes, including kidnapping, armed robbery, and cult-related activities during 2025, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, announced while addressing journalists at the Police Command Headquarters in Awka.

CP Orutugu attributed the achievements to proactive policing, intelligence-led operations, enhanced visibility patrols, improved response times, and strong community partnerships.

“Despite fluctuations in crime patterns influenced by socio-economic challenges and evolving security dynamics nationwide, the Command disrupted several kidnapping syndicates across multiple local government areas, dismantled criminal hideouts, strengthened community policing structures, and improved inter-agency collaboration,” he said.

The commissioner highlighted the successful management of major events, including the official visit of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and governorship and local government elections.

He also noted the return of normal social life in Ihiala, where community events are now conducted without intimidation.

CP Orutugu disclosed that joint operations involving the Police, DSS, Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, NSCDC, Nigeria Immigration Service, and other security operatives rescued 35 kidnapped victims, arrested over 300 suspects linked to serious crimes, recovered more than 2,000 arms and ammunition including explosives, and retrieved over 60 stolen vehicles and motorcycles. Several cases have also resulted in convictions.

The Commissioner cited high-profile arrests, including suspects linked to the murder of the late Hon. Justice Azuka in Onitsha and the killing of three Cameroonian nationals, whose bodies were recovered.

He acknowledged challenges such as evolving criminal tactics and occasional public resistance or misinformation but said these experiences would inform improved strategies in the coming year.

As the festive season approaches, CP Orutugu announced robust security deployments and reminded residents that the use of knock-out substances and social explosives is prohibited.

He urged citizens to remain vigilant, observe traffic regulations, secure their homes, and use designated motor parks.

The Commissioner expressed appreciation to the Anambra State Government, sister security agencies, traditional and religious leaders, community groups, the media, and residents for supporting the upgrade of police facilities.
