NASA prepares Artemis II Moon mission, its first crewed lunar flight in over 50 years, as China targets a 2030 landing
NASA is preparing to send astronauts back towards the Moon for the first time in more than half a century, as the Artemis II mission approaches launch amid intensifying global competition in space exploration.
The mission, expected to lift off in the coming weeks, will see astronauts aboard NASA’s Orion capsule travel on a free-return trajectory around the Moon before returning to Earth.
While no landing is planned, the flight will carry the crew farther from Earth than any humans have travelled before.
As of January 26, the Artemis II crew had entered quarantine while engineers completed final checks on the Space Launch System rocket and its supporting systems.
The earliest launch window was set for 2.41am GMT on February 7, though NASA cautioned that technical or weather-related delays remained possible.
Unlike the Apollo missions, Artemis II will not slow into lunar orbit. Instead, Orion will loop around the Moon in a figure-eight path designed to minimise risk by avoiding complex engine burns.
The spacecraft is scheduled to splash down on Earth on flight day ten, following a flyby of the Moon’s far side on day six.
The mission marks only the third flight of the Orion capsule. Problems encountered during the uncrewed Artemis I mission in 2022, including electrical faults, communications losses and unexpected heat-shield damage, raised concerns about safety.
Although the shield did not fail, NASA delayed Artemis II by more than a year while engineers adjusted the capsule’s re-entry trajectory rather than redesign the system.
Former astronaut Charles Camarda publicly described the heat-shield issue as a serious risk, prompting wider scrutiny of the programme’s readiness for crewed flight.
Attention is already turning to Artemis III, scheduled for 2027, which aims to return humans to the lunar surface. Analysts, however, remain sceptical about the timeline.
The mission requires two launches and relies on SpaceX’s Human Landing System, a modified Starship vehicle that depends on in-orbit refuelling technology yet to be demonstrated.
NASA’s plans unfold against the backdrop of China’s expanding lunar ambitions.
The China Manned Space Agency has announced its intention to land astronauts on the Moon by 2030, using a simpler mission architecture involving two Long March 10 rockets and a lunar lander resembling Apollo-era designs.
In Washington, the Artemis programme has faced growing political criticism.
Former NASA administrator Michael Griffin told Congress that delays could allow China to achieve a first lunar landing before the United States, calling Artemis an inefficient approach driven by political compromise rather than engineering simplicity.
Despite the challenges, NASA has outlined long-term goals that include building the Lunar Gateway space station and establishing a permanent human presence on the Moon by the end of the decade.
Earlier this month, the agency announced plans to develop a nuclear reactor to power a future lunar base.
As Artemis II nears launch, space analysts say the mission represents a decisive test of whether the United States can reclaim momentum in deep-space exploration or risk ceding leadership in a renewed lunar race.
