Bauchi SUBEB confirms the arrest of Umar Abubakar for allegedly stealing desks from Yelwan Kundum Primary School, pledging tougher protection for schools

The Bauchi SUBEB has confirmed the arrest of Umar Abubakar for allegedly stealing school desks from Yelwan Kundum Primary School in Bauchi Local Government Area.

Permanent Secretary of the board, Abdulmuminu Jibrin, disclosed the development while briefing journalists on Wednesday, noting that the suspect was apprehended on Friday night following a tip-off from community leaders.

“The arrest of the suspect was made by security agents after a report from the community leaders. The board is ready to ensure that justice prevails to serve as a deterrent to others,”
Jibrin said.

He added that the board would continue to partner with security agencies and community stakeholders to safeguard school property across the state, warning that anyone caught vandalising or stealing public education assets would face prosecution.

Also speaking, the Education Secretary of the Bauchi Local Government Education Authority, Talatu Yakubu, praised the Yelwan Kundum community for their vigilance, urging others to emulate their proactive stance.

“Protecting public property, especially in schools, is a collective responsibility,”
she said, while commending officers of the Tafawa Balewa Estate Police Outpost for their swift response.

The Village Head of Kundum, Nuhu Idris, recounted that the suspect, a local resident, was caught trying to cart away three desks using a Boxer J5 vehicle around 9 p.m.

“He was apprehended by the youths and handed over to the police after being caught in the act,”
Idris explained.

He added that the community had recently introduced night patrols following repeated cases of theft in the school.

Idris appealed to the Bauchi State Government to ensure that the culprit faces the full weight of the law to discourage similar incidents.

The Bauchi SUBEB reiterated its resolve to enforce stricter security around schools and protect public education infrastructure from further vandalism.
