Bayern Bundesliga win as Harry Kane captains an understrength side to a commanding 4-0 victory over Heidenheim

Bayern Munich restored their nine-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga after an understrength side cruised to a commanding 4-0 victory over Heidenheim on Sunday, with Harry Kane captaining the team for the first time.

The Bayern Bundesliga win came courtesy of goals from Josip Stanisic, Michael Olise, Luis Diaz and Kane, sealing a dominant display in the final league match before the winter break.

Borussia Dortmund had reduced the gap at the summit to six points on Friday, but Bayern responded emphatically to reassert control of the title race.

Stanisic opened the scoring in the 15th minute, heading home after Olise curled in a precise corner.

Olise doubled the advantage just after the half-hour mark, finishing from close range following a well-worked free-kick routine.

Bayern maintained control throughout despite arriving in Heidenheim without several first-team regulars, including Manuel Neuer, Joshua Kimmich, Konrad Laimer, Kim Min-jae and Aleksandar Pavlovic, who were absent due to injury, suspension and international duty.

Luis Diaz added a third late on, powering in a header to put the result beyond doubt, before Kane capped the performance in stoppage time with a composed finish for his 30th goal of the season in all competitions.

The England striker, who wore the captain’s armband for the first time in his 121st competitive appearance for Bayern, described the campaign as an “amazing year” after lifting his first league title earlier in 2025.

“We are building a spirit and team energy that is hard to break,” Kane told DAZN. “We know there is still a long way to go, but we are doing the right things.”

Bayern coach Vincent Kompany praised his depleted squad, admitting the buildup to the match had been challenging.

“I’m proud of the team because it’s not a given to come here and perform like this,” Kompany said.

The defeat leaves Heidenheim second from bottom and entrenched in the relegation zone, one point from safety.

Coach Frank Schmidt accepted responsibility for the loss, admitting his side had allowed too many chances against the league leaders.

In Sunday’s other Bundesliga fixture, bottom club Mainz and 16th-placed St Pauli played out a goalless draw.
