Nine suspects convicted over Benue church worshippers’ abduction after coordinated security operations led to rescue and arrests in Ado LGA

A Benue State court has convicted nine out of 10 suspects linked to the abduction of worshippers at St John Catholic Church in Ojeji community, Ado Local Government Area, in a case that has drawn renewed attention to insecurity in parts of the state.

The victims were reportedly kidnapped during a night vigil, prompting a swift response from joint security operatives who launched coordinated rescue operations following credible intelligence.

Authorities confirmed that all nine abducted worshippers were safely rescued without casualties after the intervention of security forces.

The Police Intelligence Response Team led the initial phase of the operation, during which four suspects were arrested and AK-47 rifles along with ammunition were recovered.

Further investigations expanded the case, resulting in additional arrests and bringing the total number of suspects to 10.

Among those apprehended were Abubakar Jibril and Ashiru Ibrahim, whose arrests reportedly provided key intelligence that helped dismantle the criminal network behind the attack.

Following arraignment in court, nine of the suspects were convicted and handed varying prison sentences, while one suspect remains on trial.

The Executive Chairman of Ado Local Government Area, Sunny Oche, commended the security agencies involved, including the police, Department of State Services (DSS), and local vigilante groups, for their coordinated efforts.

He also praised Governor Hyacinth Alia, the Inspector General of Police, and the Deputy Governor for their roles in ensuring justice and strengthening security response mechanisms in the state.

Oche described the judgment as a demonstration of the government’s commitment to protecting lives and restoring public confidence in the justice system.
