Residents call for betting ban in Jigawa over financial losses and youth hardship, citing growing social and economic concerns

Residents of Dutse in Jigawa State have called for a total ban on betting activities, urging authorities to curb what they describe as a growing social menace affecting youths and households across the state.

The demand follows widespread concern over the increasing number of betting centres in the area and the financial hardship reportedly linked to gambling losses among residents.

Speaking in separate interviews, several residents said the practice had become destructive, leading to debt, poverty and in some cases criminal behaviour among young people.

One resident, Ibrahim Musa, said he lost about ₦3 million to betting and warned that the trend was pushing vulnerable youths towards desperation and illegal activities.

He urged the state government and traditional authorities to consider a full prohibition, describing betting as a major threat to financial discipline and social stability.

Another resident, Ibrahim Mohammed, recounted losing more than ₦5 million over several years, adding that the habit had left him financially distressed after previously supporting others with business capital.

He described betting as a destructive practice that often leads to long-term economic hardship.

Ali Sabo, another resident, said he had been involved in betting for over a decade and had lost more than ₦5 million within the period, blaming weak regulation for the growing prevalence of gambling.

He also raised concerns about mental health challenges among some associates, which he attributed to betting-related stress and losses.

In Gujungu town in Taura Local Government Area, Sabo Haladu, a farm labourer, said he repeatedly engaged in betting in hopes of improving his financial situation but instead suffered consistent losses.

He joined other residents in calling for a comprehensive ban on betting, arguing that many idle youths are being drawn into the practice due to unemployment and economic pressure.

The residents urged the Jigawa State Government to take urgent action, warning that failure to intervene could deepen poverty and social instability in affected communities.
