A suspected transformer vandal was burnt alive by a mob in Calabar. Police warn against jungle justice and urge citizens to report suspects

In a tragic incident on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, a young man suspected of vandalizing an electricity transformer was burnt alive by a mob in Calabar, Cross River State (Calabar).

The event occurred around 6:30 a.m. on Palm Street near Target Junction. Local vigilante members reportedly apprehended the suspect and set him ablaze before police could arrive.

Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday, confirmed the incident, noting that the burnt body was found in front of the transformer.

Items recovered at the scene included an old electricity meter box, copper wire, and cables, allegedly vandalized.

Authorities, including local government and Environmental Health Services, were called in to remove the corpse. ASP Sunday emphasized that mob action or jungle justice is illegal, urging the public to report suspected criminals to law enforcement for proper investigation and prosecution.

This marks the second similar occurrence in the area within a month, highlighting the growing risks associated with transformer vandalism and vigilantism in Calabar.
