Chimamanda Adichie UNN appointment: Literary icon named visiting professor at University of Nigeria alongside global scholars Kevin Urama and James Robinson

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Prof. Simon Ortuanya, has appointed celebrated author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie as a visiting professor of the institution.

The appointments, announced in a statement issued on Wednesday by UNN’s acting Public Relations Officer, Mr Inya Egwu, also include African Development Bank Executive Prof. Kevin Urama and University of Chicago professor Prof. James Robinson.

According to the statement, the appointments, dated December 18, are part of Ortuanya’s drive to position UNN on the global academic stage.

The letters of appointment outline responsibilities for visiting professors, including teaching engagements, research collaboration, mentorship, and strategic academic interactions.

Adichie, widely regarded as one of the world’s most influential literary voices, was appointed in recognition of her outstanding contributions to literature, creative writing, and global intellectual discourse.

The statement said her role will enrich the arts and humanities through lectures, scholarly engagements, and mentorship of students and young academics.

Prof. Urama, a distinguished development economist, was appointed to strengthen teaching, research, and policy-oriented programmes in economics, development studies, and related disciplines.

Prof. Robinson, a political economist at the University of Chicago, will provide expertise in governance, institutions, and economic development, exposing students and lecturers to cutting-edge global scholarship.

Prof. Ortuanya said the appointments reflect UNN’s commitment to attracting eminent scholars and industry leaders, reinforcing the university’s vision as a globally competitive institution.

“UNN was founded to be a globally competitive institution; these appointments represent a significant step towards reclaiming that legacy and enhancing its global relevance,” he stated.

The statement noted that Adichie had previously attended UNN, studying medicine for about a year and a half before moving to the United States for further education.
