CHURAC urges the Federal Government to grant a Presidential Pardon for Nnamdi Kanu, citing potential to reduce insecurity and ease South East tensions

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Centre for Human Rights and Anti-Corruption Crusade (CHURAC), Alaowei Cleric Ebikonbowei, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government to grant a Presidential Pardon for Nnamdi Kanu.

Ebikonbowei made the appeal in a statement sent to Our Correspondent in Warri on Saturday, citing concerns over the nation’s security challenges.

“We can’t afford to entertain another set of insecurity in addition to what we are facing,” he said. “Our security system seems overwhelmed, especially in the Northern part of the country.”

According to the legal practitioner, granting the pardon would help bring peace to the South East. “Keeping Nnamdi Kanu in detention, while separatist movements continue, won’t stop insecurity.

The man is highly loved by his people and so a presidential pardon is the best way out to avert unrest,” Ebikonbowei stated.

He also noted that Kanu has been responsible for his own legal challenges. “He had all the time to defend himself but sacked all his legal team, including learned Senior Advocates.

He abused everybody, even the court where he was standing trial. Who does that?”

Ebikonbowei expressed hope that Kanu would now allow his lawyers to handle his appeal, adding, “I won’t say much about the appeal process. Let his legal team appeal the judgement.”
