Curaçao World Cup population record confirmed by Guinness World Records after the island becomes the smallest nation to qualify for the FIFA World Cup

The Football Federation President Gilbert Martina of Curaçao has received official recognition from Guinness World Records in Houston, as the organisation confirmed a historic Curaçao World Cup population record following the nation’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The announcement, presented days after the island’s tournament debut at the FIFA World Cup, formally acknowledges that Curaçao has become the smallest country by population ever to qualify for football’s global showpiece.

With a population of just 156,115 at the time of qualification, Curaçao surpasses Iceland’s previous benchmark of approximately 350,000 set during its 2018 campaign, setting a striking and unprecedented milestone in international football history.

Guinness World Records confirmed the achievement in a statement, noting that the qualification was secured on 19 November 2025 in Kingston, Jamaica, after a resilient qualifying run that saw Curaçao top its CONCACAF third-round group.

The organisation described how the “Blue Wave” secured three wins and three draws from six matches, sealing their place at the tournament with a disciplined 0–0 draw against Jamaica, a result widely regarded as a defining moment in their football journey.

The team, managed by veteran Dutch coach Dick Advocaat, has been praised for its tactical discipline and composure throughout the qualifying campaign, which defied expectations given the nation’s small population base.

Gilbert Martina, who received the official certificate in Houston, described the recognition as a proud moment for Curaçao football, reflecting years of investment in talent development and international competitiveness.

Despite their historic qualification, Curaçao faced a challenging start at the tournament proper, suffering a 7–1 defeat in their opening match on Sunday, June 14, in the 2026 edition jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Nevertheless, football analysts say the Curaçao World Cup population record underscores a broader shift in global football competitiveness, where smaller nations are increasingly capable of challenging traditional powerhouses on the world stage.
