Dele Momodu denies Tinubu spy claims, saying his role in opposition politics is driven by concern for Nigeria and democratic balance

Veteran journalist and politician Dele Momodu has dismissed claims that he is secretly working for Bola Ahmed Tinubu, revealing that some members of the opposition believe he acts as a spy for the Nigerian president.

Momodu, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, made the clarification during an appearance on the television programme Sunday Politics, where he defended his political position and longstanding relationships across Nigeria’s political divide.

The media entrepreneur said critics who assume his views are influenced by his past alliance with Atiku Abubakar during the last election misunderstand his political stance.

“It’s ignorant to say I’m talking like this because I supported Atiku in the last election. I’m a million times closer to Tinubu than I am to Atiku,” Momodu said.

According to him, his longstanding relationship with President Tinubu has fuelled suspicions among some opposition figures.

“In fact, some people think I am Tinubu’s spy. If it were because of money, Tinubu has a far bigger war chest than Atiku will ever have,” he added.

Momodu insisted that his involvement in opposition politics is driven by a genuine desire to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy rather than personal political gain.

“If I’m here, it means I have genuine interest in Nigeria because I believe there must be opposition politics,” he said.

The former presidential aspirant also argued that a united opposition front could pose a formidable challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress in the 2027 general election.

Momodu suggested that a joint ticket involving Atiku alongside a southern political figure such as Peter Obi or Rotimi Amaechi could significantly weaken Tinubu’s chances of securing another mandate.

“I believe if we have a combination of Atiku, maybe with Peter Obi, maybe with Rotimi Amaechi, or any other person from the South, Tinubu will be gone,” Momodu said.

He added that discussions around an emerging opposition coalition within the African Democratic Congress could prove decisive in reshaping the country’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
