Delta police have arrested a suspected gunrunner and recovered three AK-47 rifles and 3,120 rounds of ammunition concealed in a modified car

The Delta State Police Command has arrested a 55-year-old suspected gunrunner and recovered a cache of weapons, including three AK-47 rifles and 3,120 rounds of ammunition.

The suspect was intercepted on 3rd March during a stop-and-search operation along the Warri-Benin highway near Western Delta University, Oghara, in Ethiope West Local Government Area.

Police operatives attached to Dragon 14 stopped a Toyota Camry driven by the suspect and noticed irregularities in the vehicle’s trunk size.

According to police spokesperson Bright Edafe, officers became suspicious and conducted a thorough search.

“He was asked to open the trunk, which appeared unusually small.

The officers, convinced that the vehicle had been modified for illicit activities, removed the back seat.

This led to the discovery of three AK-47 rifles, 2,080 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, and 1,040 rounds of 51mm ammunition concealed in four boxes,” Edafe stated.

The police have taken the suspect into custody while further investigations are underway.

Authorities are working to uncover the source of the weapons and any connections to criminal networks.

This arrest highlights the ongoing efforts by Delta State Police to combat arms smuggling and violent crime in the region.
