Delta State House of Assembly suspends Ogwashi-Uku Polytechnic Rector and Bursar for six months over alleged financial recklessness and misconduct

Delta State House of Assembly has suspended the Rector of Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku, Professor Emmanuel Achuenu, for six months over allegations of financial recklessness, misappropriation of funds, and gross administrative misconduct.

The Assembly also suspended the institution’s Bursar, who was found complicit in the financial irregularities uncovered during a parliamentary investigation.

The decision followed the adoption of a report by a House investigative committee set up to examine the financial and administrative operations of the polytechnic.

Presiding over the plenary, Speaker Rt. Hon. Dennis Guwor said the inquiry uncovered “multiple instances of unauthorized expenditures and administrative lapses” under Professor Achuenu’s leadership.

Lawmakers described the Rector’s conduct as a flagrant abuse of office and a violation of public institution statutes, stressing that the integrity of the state’s tertiary education system must not be compromised.

According to the committee’s findings, Professor Achuenu allegedly ignored directives from the Governing Council and breached established financial procedures in the management of institutional funds.

In its resolution, the Assembly upheld the six-month suspension earlier recommended by the polytechnic’s Governing Council, saying the measure was essential to reinforce accountability and discipline within the school.

The Delta State Ministry of Higher Education was directed to oversee the institution’s affairs during the suspension period to ensure transparency, continuity, and due process.

Lawmakers reiterated the Assembly’s zero tolerance for financial mismanagement in public establishments, adding that the sanction serves as a warning to other heads of institutions.

“This decision is aimed at restoring integrity, public confidence, and adherence to due process within the state’s tertiary education sector,” the resolution stated.
