Cross River Assembly orders Dickson Agbor suspension over alleged domestic assault, sets up committee to investigate the lawmaker

The Cross River State House of Assembly has ordered the Dickson Agbor suspension, placing the lawmaker representing Obubra I State Constituency, Dickson Agbor, on indefinite suspension over allegations of domestic assault.

The decision was reached during plenary on Thursday following a motion moved by Davies Etta and seconded by Francis Bassey Asuquo.

While presenting the motion, Etta condemned the alleged violent conduct involving Agbor, describing the development as behaviour inconsistent with the ethical standards expected of members of the legislature.

Etta said the Assembly must take decisive action to safeguard the integrity and reputation of the legislative institution.

“We must ensure that members conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the values and responsibilities entrusted to us by the people,” he said.

After deliberations, the House resolved that Agbor should be suspended from all legislative activities indefinitely pending the outcome of an investigation into the allegation.

The Assembly also approved the constitution of an ad hoc committee to examine the matter and submit its findings for further legislative action.

Following the resolution, Agbor was escorted out of the chamber by the Sergeant-at-Arms, in compliance with the directive of the House.

Speaking on the development, the Speaker of the Assembly, Elvert Ayambem, said the legislature remained committed to upholding discipline, dignity and the integrity of the House.

Ayambem emphasised that lawmakers must conduct themselves in ways that reflect the trust placed in them by their constituents.

“The House will not condone any form of misconduct capable of bringing the legislature into disrepute. We must continue to uphold the dignity of this institution,” he said.

The Assembly stated that the Dickson Agbor suspension will remain in force until the investigative committee concludes its work and presents its report to the House.
