Egypt lead Africa’s knockout bid in World Cup struggle as Cape Verde and Ghana seek Round of 16 spots with Morocco already through.

Egypt Football Association representatives, Cape Verde Football Federation officials, and Ghana Football Association executives on Friday, 3 July 2026, oversaw key Round of 32 fixtures at the 2026 FIFA World Cup across the United States, where the three nations aimed to secure places in the Round of 16 alongside Morocco, the continent’s only confirmed qualifier at that stage.

The matches held in Dallas, Miami and Kansas City formed a decisive phase in Africa’s campaign, following a strong overall showing in the group stage.

Morocco had earlier set the tone for the continent by defeating the Netherlands in a dramatic penalty shootout to book their place in the Round of 16.

Africa entered the expanded tournament with 10 teams and delivered one of its strongest group-stage performances in recent memory, with nine nations progressing to the Round of 32.

The knockout phase, however, has proven far less forgiving, with each fixture carrying immediate elimination stakes.

Egypt began proceedings against Australia in Dallas, targeting a place in the Round of 16 and seeking to build on what has already been a promising campaign.

The Pharaohs approached the encounter with a structured defensive plan and a focus on clinical finishing in transition.

Cape Verde followed in Miami against Argentina, one of the tournament favourites, in a fixture that tested the island nation’s resilience after a surprise and widely praised run to the knockout stage. Their campaign has drawn attention for tactical discipline and collective organisation.

Ghana concluded the African fixtures in Kansas City against Colombia, aiming to extend the continent’s presence in the tournament.

The Black Stars faced a physically intense and well-drilled South American side, making their task especially demanding.

Egypt coach Rui Vitória had earlier emphasised the decisive nature of knockout football, noting that efficiency in front of goal often determines outcomes at this level.

Cape Verde captain Ryan Mendes also highlighted his side’s belief, saying, “We have shown we belong on this stage and we will fight until the end.”

Morocco remain Africa’s standout performers, having already secured their Round of 16 place after a landmark win over the Netherlands, a result widely regarded as one of the defining moments of their campaign.

Football analysts continue to point out that while African teams have improved significantly in competitiveness at the 2026 World Cup, converting performances into knockout-stage progress remains a major challenge against established global football powers.
