Ohanaeze Ndigbo hails President Tinubu as the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway reopens, ending 24 years of road challenges in Southeast Nigeria

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has praised President Bola Tinubu for completing the long-delayed Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, scheduled for reopening on 31 March 2026.

The expressway, a key transport artery spanning 107 kilometres in each direction, had been described by Ohanaeze Ndigbo as a “perilous burden” for over 24 years, posing grave risks to commuters and regional commerce.

In a statement released on Wednesday by the factional Deputy President-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and National Spokesperson, Chief Chineyeze Ohia, the group hailed the project as a “substantive infrastructural revolution” for the Southeast, crediting the federal government for ending the decades-long neglect.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo highlighted that the project not only restores safe connectivity but also promises economic revitalisation and political goodwill ahead of the 2027 elections.

The group urged the federal government to expedite additional road projects, including the Markudi-Nsukka-Nightmile-Enugu Expressway and the Calabar-Abakiliki-Benue-Abuja Super Highway.

“The reopening of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway marks not just the restoration of a vital transportation artery but symbolizes hope, revitalisation, and growth for Ndigbo,” the statement said.

The organisation also commended the Minister of Works, Engr. David Nweze Umahi, for overseeing the project, urging continued investment in infrastructure to further improve mobility, safety, and economic activity in the Southeast.

The 24-year wait for a modernised Enugu-Onitsha corridor underscores longstanding regional development challenges, which Ohanaeze Ndigbo said the federal government has now decisively addressed.
